Once the first technology of the BMW X1 was substituted with the existing model, the tiny crossover turned from a rear-drive-based system to a Mini-derived front-wheel-drive structures. It also decreased the recently available inline-six engine motor and was designed more conservatively, with a decidedly mainstream and conventionally proportioned form. The modified X1 is a success–and happens to be among our 10Best Vehicles and SUVs winners–but BMW apparently recognizes its insufficient zest. Enter the new (and mechanically similar) X2, internally called F39. From the sporty subcompact crossover that is a lot more visually extroverted which is slated for a U.S.-market unveiling in the springtime of next season.

The X2 includes a long hood, a steeply raked windscreen, a streamlined greenhouse, and an aggressively designed tail with horizontal taillights. It’s not merely an X1 with a far more steeply raked backlight but a unique design all its. The pentagonal kidney grilles usher in a fresh design for Munich, and one of well known elements is the positioning of the 2018 BMW X2: Bavaria’s Zestier Subcompact SUV roundels on the C-pillar, which echo famous BMW models including the 3200CS, the 2000CS, and the iconic E9 coupe (2500CS, 2.8CS, 3.0CS, and 3.0CSL). It’s a solid design cue that must not be limited to the X2, where in fact the logos look right.
The strong appearance can be increased via the optional M Sport X program, shown here on the yellowish car. A fresh offering from BMW, it is designed to incorporate design components of BMW’s X SUVs and its own M performance models and is also reported to be influenced by rallying. An X2 with this package has its bumpers and area skirts, 19-inches wheels (with all-season or summer rubber) that may be upgraded to 20s, and matte Frozen Grey exterior trim bits designed to accentuate the CUV’s ground clearance. In the M Sport X, the default aluminium trim includes a hexagonal design but can be swapped for just one of three other choices. (A far more familiar M Sport package deal, without the X, comes in Europe–that’s the blue car pictured here.)
Even though the proportions might suggest a rear-drive model for some, the 2018 BMW X2: Bavaria’s Zestier Subcompact SUV mounts its engine motor transversely, just as the X1 and current Little models that also use the UKL system. While Europeans can order from among three- and four-cylinder gas and diesel engine motor options, the American lineup will limit choices to just one single: a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four making 228 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque. As is typical for BMWs, the framework has Eco Expert, Comfort, and Sport travelling modes; each influences the steering weight, powertrain response, and, if the optional adaptive dampers have been fixed, suspension firmness. On top of that, an M Sport suspension system can be found that lowers the drive level by 0.4 in .. On bottom part models, 18-in . wheels are standard and 19s are optional.

All-wheel drive and hill-descent control will be standard. Manual and dual-clutch computerized transmissions available in European countries aren’t on our order sheet, as the only real transmission offering can be an eight-speed conventional intelligent. (The M Sport X bundle unlocks a Sport program for the gearbox.) 2018 BMW X2: Bavaria’s Zestier Subcompact SUV boasts a zero-to-60-mph time of 6.3 a few moments; that is right around enough time we coaxed from an identical X1. A far more powerful M Performance model can be done but not validated; we’d enjoy to see one filling up the gap still left wide open by the six-cylinder X1 of yore, but we’re not keeping our breathing in expectation of a transverse six.
The 2018 BMW X2: Bavaria’s Zestier Subcompact SUV seems to share almost all of its interior trappings, like the dashboard and the guts gaming system, with the X1. The dissimilarities are portrayed mainly through more extroverted color and cut inside and away. Available technical includes the latest iDrive infotainment, Wi-Fi hotspot connection, 6.5- or 8.8-in . touchscreen displays, and BMW Connected+ functionality. Although rates hasn’t yet been declared, we expect the X2 to cost about $2000 more than an equal X1, placing the starting price at $38,000 roughly.
